Sponsorship/Fundraising Tips

You can download a Basingstoke Run sponsorship form here.

Set up an online fundraising page on Virgin Money Giving here.

Do you need some help getting your fundraising started? Take a look at our tips below;

  • Please do remember to ask your sponsors to ‘Gift Aid’ their donation if they are a UK taxpayer as we can claim an extra 25% at no extra cost to them. All they need to do is tick the box and fill out their full name, address and postcode. Gift Aid makes up a huge amount of income for the Hospice and in 2016/17 brought in over £80,000.
  • Make sure your fundraising page is compelling and explains your motivation. Set yourself a goal and make people aware of it!
  • Tell your story about why are you fundraising for this charity and add pictures to your page so people can see how hard you are training!
  • Time your donation request as people are more likely to be generous with their sponsorship after payday.
  • Ask close friends and family to donate first as other people may then match their generosity.
  • Tell people what your fundraising target is and what their contribution will help achieve for your charity (see example costs below)
  • Add some perspective around a suggested donation e.g. £10 might mean missing a takeaway dinner.
  • Interact on social media; keep sharing your Virgin Money Giving page. Did you know that 45% of traffic comes from mobile devices and 30% of donations are given using a mobile device?
  • Keep reminding people to sponsor you! On average, it takes 2-3 emails to get 1 donation.
  • Set yourself small weekly fundraising targets rather than thinking about a daunting total target.
  • Collect donations before your event – as soon as the money is received, we pass it on to your charity so they benefit straightaway.
  • Get friends and family to spread the word about your fundraising too – they’ll be keen to help you get more sponsors.
  • Mention your fundraising event in your answerphone messages, email signatures, notice boards, anywhere you can!
